Ask Spry… So, You Want To Be A Model?

Hey Spry,
My daughter has always talked about being a model. She will be 17 years old very soon, and I honestly think she has what it takes. I read your post on Fashion Week, and learned that you started as a model. What advice can you give her (or me) to seriously pursue a career in modeling?
-Model Mama
Dear Model Mama,
From the first day I stepped onto a runway, I’ve been asked this question over and over again. Although there is no sure way to break into the industry, there are a few simple rules that I feel everyone should follow. Here are some of my own suggestions to jump-starting a career as a professional model.
Keep Your Money In Your Pockets: If an agency really believes that they can make money from signing you, they will do what they can to make sure you have everything you need. I have a friend who is signed to one of the top agencies in the world. They set him up with all of the photo shoots necessary to begin. His first check from the agency was for $30.00, for a job he did. Although the assignment paid about $2000.00, the agency took back what they initially put out to get him started in the right direction (along with their usual 20 percent). Needless to say, he was very satisfied with the payments that followed.
Sometimes Less Is More: Don’t just go for an agency because you’re familiar with the name. Although the more popular agencies seem like the safest approach, newer faces often get lost in the shuffle. There are smaller agencies that can (and will) get you the work, yet give you the attention you may crave.
Do Your Research: In New York City alone, there are numerous modeling agencies, and they usually specialize in different areas (print, runway, catalog, etc.). Make sure you find an agency that caters to your specific needs. Also, be proactive in deciding which direction you’d like your career to go. If you want to be in a magazine(s), pick one up and see what agencies the models they use are from.
Your “Look” Is Your Job: I’ve seen so many models get dropped for not keeping up their physical appearance. This includes everything from taking good care of your skin, to sustaining your weight. For instance, if you’re signed on as a plus-size model, losing weight could jeopardize your contract. Even something as simple as changing your hairstyle/color must be approved by the agency.
Build Up Your Self-Esteem: It is important to understand that you will not be chosen for every gig. Along with the yeses, be prepared for many nos, as well. Realize that castings are not based on how good or bad a person looks, but on “the look” that the client is going for. Constant self-reassurance, as well as a strong support system, can help you maintain a positive outlook.

Ask Spry… Evening Wear For Men???

Hey Spry,
I wanted your advice on what to wear to a fundraiser/fashion show, being held by my church. It specifies “evening wear”, and as a 30 year old man, I want to look elegant, but with some edge. I guess it’s apparent that I have no idea what would work to give this effect. Any suggestions?
-Elegant Edge
Dear Elegant,
First of all, because evening wear is specified, I hope you already know that a (dark) suit is required; and as a 30 year old gentleman, you should already own one! There was once a time where only black suits were acceptable for evening attire. However, we now have an opportunity to play with different colors (brown, gray, navy, etc.). Depending on how far outside of the box you want to step, you have a few options.
My first suggestion is for the man that is somewhat conservative. I encourage you to try a basic black suit, a black shirt, and skinny black tie. Add a pop of color with a jazzy pocket square. The bigger your personality, the brighter the square should be. Avoid trying to match, by choosing one with “black” in the pattern(s). This look will say “I’m classic, yet stylish!”
The second look would be for the guy that wants to express that he understands fashion, and isn’t afraid to show it! Compliment your favorite suit with a colorful tie and pocket square. However, stay away from matching sets! Try mixing prints with similar colors. If you’re baffled, try a solid tie with a print pocket square, or vice versa.
The last look is for the dude that is up on all the latest trends, and will set the pace for seasons to come! Your dark suit will come in colors like purple or burgundy. Keep in mind that although you want to stand out, the shades should be very dark. Accent it with a complimenting print or solid button down (depending on your taste). No pocket square required here, because the suit speaks for itself.
Whatever direction you choose to go, the most important tip to remember is to make sure the suit is tailored to your physique. This simple step can make an average guy look like he just stepped off of the runway. Have fun at your gala!
Ask Spry… Bridesmaid’s Dress Stress!

Hey Spry,
I’ve been arguing with my friend about my upcoming wedding next year (it’s not official yet). Anyway, she thinks the bridesmaids have to all wear the same dresses, and I don’t think they should. Also, I’m thinking sapphire blue and lime apple are okay colors for my wedding. I need an expert’s opinion, so I’m calling on Spry!
-Can’t Decide
Dear Can’t Decide,
First let me say congratulations on your upcoming marriage. I’m sure you have lots of decisions to make, including the one about the dresses. One of the first things that you need to remember is that your wedding is just that… YOURS! I’m not encouraging a “Bridezilla” moment, yet it is important that everything from the table settings to the wedding party’s attire, is catered to your liking. Although I’m sure your friend wants to help, it sounds like her dress selection is more about what she wants, and less about your desires. She needs to understand that her position is to offer constructive criticism, while supporting your wishes.
Although I’ve never heard of the color “lime apple”, I think I know what you mean (smile). That, paired with sapphire, sounds really beautiful. Just be careful with the accessories; that can get tricky. As for the actual design of the dresses, I agree with you. Matching gowns is a long time marital tradition that needs to be thrown out the window! Just like “one-size”, one style does NOT fit all! Having different styles will give your bridesmaids an opportunity to wear one that is most flattering to their body types (and personalities). Keep in mind, however, that there should be some form of consistency throughout the bridal party. Whether it’s the length of the dresses or matching sashes, something should tie (pun intended) the ladies together. Otherwise, it will look like you emailed everyone a color swatch and said “go for it!”; which could only end in disaster!
Whatever you choose, remember that just like a marriage, it’s good to have both similarities and differences. I’ve realized that those are the ones that work best! Good luck!
Here are some dos and don’ts for inspiration.
Ask Spry… Men’s Shirt Collar?
Hey Spry,
I am doing a photo shoot and will be wearing a suit and a shirt with no tie. I would like for my collar to stay up during the shoot and hold its shape. What type of shirt should I be looking for or what do I do to make sure I have that “look” that Im going for?
- Luke
Hey Luke,
Although you want to purchase a shirt that is of high standard, the type of shirt that you buy is not as important as what you do to it to make the collar stand on it’s on. When buying a shirt, look for good quality cotton blend shirts. If you’re prepared to dish out some dollars, Brooks Brothers or Thomas Pink is the way to go. However, you will find that stores like Nordstrom’s or Express (love thier colors) also offer shirts with good craftsmanship, at lower price points.
Whatever shirt you choose, what’s most important is that you properly prepare to allow your shirt to give its greatest performance. Using a spray starch when ironing will increase the stiffness of the shirt. Also, the type of collar stay you use is important. Grown men do grown things! Therefore, it’s time for an upgrade. Throw away the plastic ones that come with the shirt! Step your game up by purchasing brass collar stays. I buy mine as a set, and get different sizes for different shirts. Finally, we turn to one of my favorite “must have” items for assistance; double-sided tape! Take a small piece, and put it behind the collar. This will allow you to manipulate the collar, and place it where you need it to be.
Hope this helps!

Ask Spry… What To Wear?
Hey Spry,
I am getting a new dress made for a party. Its Emerald green taffetta, just below the knee. I want to look elegant (its at a church) but still stylish with a little edge. I wish i could post a pic. So the question is what color shoes to wear?
-CLM
Dear CLM,
Emerald green taffeta? Sounds really cute! Spring is your time to shine, and who better to teach how to blossom than Mother Nature herself. She has fun with color, and so should you.
When accessorizing, first ask yourself, “What family is this color in?” Your emerald green dress is a member of the jewel tones. Therefore, explore your options amongst its relatives. My favorite would be a bright purple or hot pink. Try these purple suede heels by Steven.
But don’t stop at the shoes. For a little more pizazz, select another color for your bag. Remember to keep it in the family. Look at this yellow patent leather clutch.
Good luck, and make sure you take pictures and send them to me so I can post them on the site!
Ask Spry… Need A New Look!
Dear Spry,
Spry how can I change my “fashion sense” all together? I am very simple, plain and neat. I want to be a lil more edgy without going broke. HELP
-Iris
Hey Iris,
Nowadays everyone is trying to pinch a penny. Lord knows I am. With the new season coming up, now is the perfect time to reinvent your look. Here are three helpful hints….
1. Start with bold accessories. Not sure where you are now with them, but it’s always a great beginning to a newer you! Try bigger earrings, bold necklaces or large cuffs. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box! Accessories can be fun and inexpensive. Just stay away from the 99 cent stores. LOL!
2. Splurge on shoes!!! I know, I know! You said you want to save money. So let’s just say “invest”! If you do have it in your budget, you should consider adding that one “statement piece”, for the season, to your footwear collection. Try getting a multi-colored shoe that you could rock with almost anything.
3. Color, print, texture, shimmer… Choose one (or two)! This can be done with jewelry, shoes or bags. You can also add these styles under other garments for layering. Once you’ve grown more comfortable, you can use these styles as outer layers. Just don’t do them all at once!
Good luck!
Spry Lee Scott
