A Deeper Look Into Spry…

Recently, on one of my trips to Atlanta, I had the pleasure of sitting down for an in-depth interview with Ed Garnes of From Afros to Shelltoes.  This, I must say, is the best interview thus far that I’ve had since my career began.  Sharing laughs, industry insights, ah-hah moments and now-and-laters, our scheduled one hour conversation, turned into three.  Although fashion was at the forefront of the discussion, the transition to inspiration and family values (amongst other topics), was an easy one.  For the first time, I was able to open up about more than just my cut-and-dry career as a celeb stylist.  As much as I enjoyed the live interview with Ed, I was even more delighted reading it.  BIG UPS to Mr. Garnes for a job well-done. Prom Makeover…

America wants to hear good news…
Celebrity Stylist, Spry Lee Scott and Radio Personality Déjà Vu to the Rescue!

Although the prom is not considered a “need”, it is in many cases, a defining moment in a young lady’s life. Prom is a celebration of academic achievement, the future and friendship, yet there are some young people who don’t have an opportunity to participate in this important rite of passage. Young women in foster care often don’t attend because of things that others may take for granted, like having that special gown that sets them apart from the rest.  This contest gives America an opportunity to let our young people know that even in these trying economic times, they are not forgotten.

In an effort to support and encourage young women in foster care who are reaching the important milestones of finishing school and advancing their education, Déjà Vu (radio personality), Power 105.1 FM and New York City Children’s Services are collecting donated gowns* in the Sista Girlz Prom Dress Drive.  On Saturday, May 9th, Celebrity Fashion Stylist, Spry Lee Scott** joins the team, where the dresses will be handed out to high school seniors.  This day-long event will allow the young women to choose and try on dresses, while receiving fashion and beauty tips from industry professionals.

An opportunity of a lifetime will be given to all of the high school seniors in attendance.  One deserving high school senior will win the opportunity to have her own personal stylist for two days.  The lucky contest winner will win a shopping trip in New York City, where she will hang with Celebrity Fashion Stylist/Fashion Savant, Spry Lee Scott to pick out a new prom dress, and receive personal style tips. This is just the beginning!  To help her get ready, Spry will personally show up on the day of the prom, armed with a team comprised of a Celebrity Hair Stylist and a Celebrity Makeup Artist. Spry & friends will offer a head-to-toe red carpet style makeover, and help this young lady look and feel her best!

To make her day even more special, the lucky winner will receive a celebrity style photo shoot, in the studio of a professional fashion photographer.  After the shoot, she will be whisked away, in her very own private car service, which will take her to the venue, where she will dazzle her school classmates, faculty and friends!

* If you have a new or gently used formal gown (all sizes accepted, including plus sizes), please drop it off at the studios at 32 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013 Tuesday - Friday between noon and 5pm. Deadline for drop-off is May 1.

BET Upfront

Last week, I hung out with my client, April Woodard of Inside Edition, who was a guest reporter for BET Upfront.  This is where the network presents their new shows to potential advertisers.  Surpringly, I was really impressed with the large selection of quality (yes, I said quality) programming that will be made available to the public beginning this Fall (2009).  Their line up includes reality shows for singing sensation, Monica and actor, Terry Crews; an inspiring show that allow celebrities to give back - hosted by MC Lyte; and a late night talk show with our favorite curvy comedian, Mo’Nique (just to name a few).  They also introduced a new network named Centric, which is aimed to attract more mature/post-BET viewers.  Believe it or not, I’m excited.  Pictures from the event posted below.

Ask Spry… What To Wear?

March 24, 2009 by Spry

Hey Spry,

I am getting a new dress made for a party. Its Emerald green taffetta, just below the knee. I want to look elegant (its at a church) but still stylish with a little edge. I wish i could post a pic. So the question is what color shoes to wear?

-CLM

Dear CLM,

Emerald green taffeta? Sounds really cute! Spring is your time to shine, and who better to teach how to blossom than Mother Nature herself. She has fun with color, and so should you.

When accessorizing, first ask yourself, “What family is this color in?” Your emerald green dress is a member of the jewel tones. Therefore, explore your options amongst its relatives. My favorite would be a bright purple or hot pink. Try these purple suede heels by Steven.

But don’t stop at the shoes. For a little more pizazz, select another color for your bag. Remember to keep it in the family. Look at this yellow patent leather clutch.

Good luck, and make sure you take pictures and send them to me so I can post them on the site!

Ask Spry… Need A New Look!

March 24, 2009 by Spry

Dear Spry,

Spry how can I change my “fashion sense” all together? I am very simple, plain and neat. I want to be a lil more edgy without going broke. HELP
-Iris

Hey Iris,

Nowadays everyone is trying to pinch a penny. Lord knows I am. With the new season coming up, now is the perfect time to reinvent your look. Here are three helpful hints….

1. Start with bold accessories. Not sure where you are now with them, but it’s always a great beginning to a newer you! Try bigger earrings, bold necklaces or large cuffs. Don’t be afraid to step outside of the box! Accessories can be fun and inexpensive. Just stay away from the 99 cent stores. LOL!

2. Splurge on shoes!!! I know, I know! You said you want to save money. So let’s just say “invest”! If you do have it in your budget, you should consider adding that one “statement piece”, for the season, to your footwear collection. Try getting a multi-colored shoe that you could rock with almost anything.

3. Color, print, texture, shimmer… Choose one (or two)! This can be done with jewelry, shoes or bags. You can also add these styles under other garments for layering. Once you’ve grown more comfortable, you can use these styles as outer layers. Just don’t do them all at once!

Good luck!
